During any long session or race, most of each stroke converts cleanly into forward motion. A small fraction gets diverted into correction, stabilization, and adjustment. Some of that cost comes from outside: the ocean pushes, the boat responds, and effort goes toward holding a line and keeping the hull settled underneath you. Some of it comes from inside: a movement pattern that introduces friction rather than removing it, force arriving at an angle and needing correction downstream. A few percent per stroke sounds small. Held over an hour, it adds up to real time.

Moving with the boat and fighting the boat are two distinct sensations, and training decides which one shows up on a given day, the same way training decides stamina or strength. When the hull settles naturally between strokes, corrections disappear into the rhythm and the work flows forward. When the boat turns reactive, each correction costs more than it should, and effort that should be building speed goes instead toward managing the consequences of the last correction.

External losses work the same way. A line that wanders off course costs more to fix than it would have cost to hold. A late entry onto a run turns the same energy expenditure into less return. Chasing water that has already moved, rather than positioning for water that is about to move, burns time before the decision even registers.

What makes efficiency losses hard to address is that they don’t get felt as losses. They get felt as normal effort. The extra stabilization work, the trunk rotation that never connects to the blade, the slight timing lag on each catch: each carries a cost, but none produce a sensation that flags itself as wrong. They fold into the overall sense of how hard the session is, and get credited to conditions or fitness or a bad day, which is exactly why this capability is so slow to train. You can’t correct a fault you never register as one.

Across a long effort, small frictions compound. A paddler spending five percent of each stroke on internal correction arrives at the final quarter of a race carrying more accumulated cost than someone running at three percent. The fitness can be identical. The output can look the same from the outside. The difference sits in what it costs to produce that output, and in how much remains once the demands of the session increase.

Stability is built the same way, through enough sessions in the boat that the nervous system stops treating balance as a separate task. A paddler who rarely needs to reach out to stabilize the boat spends less energy on that task and more on propulsion. That freed capacity stays available as margin, showing up as consistency late in a session, when the gap between a managed effort and an unmanaged one grows largest.

Efficiency is a durability measure, not a technique goal, and like the other durability measures in this arc it responds to training rather than insight. Understanding where friction comes from doesn’t remove it. Session after session moving through the fault does. Small losses that compound over time carry the same weight as large ones that are visible.
