Wesley, Mark and I are extremely excited to re-introduce SurfskiRacing.com.  Here are the highlights!!

Our goals in re-doing the site were:

  • Easier to read, navigate and search.
  • Easier to post articles so we can get more content up in shorter period of time.
  • Interactive.  This was a big driver for the re-write.  We now have the capability to allow readers to comment on any post/article, including reviews and race reports.  We hope this will encourage more paddlers to share their personal experiences or views.
  • More Contributors.  As we continue to expand, we look forward to more paddlers sharing their experiences not only in comments (which are great) but in writing of new posts/articles.

Front Page:

  • Rotating “Featured Articles”, ability to keep posts “sticky”
  • Next section, “Latest Stories”…latest 9 post chronologically
  • Next section, “Races”…latest 6 Race related post chronologically
  • Last section, “Reviews”…latest 6 Review related post chronologically

Top Menus:

  • NE Races – similar as before, except archive of all race reports at bottom
  • SSR Race Series – similar with 2010 archived, 2011 ready to go
  • Northeast Calendar – Calendar for Northeast races and events.  Categorized by SSR Races, NE Open Water Races, NE Flat Water Races, Informal Paddles and General.   Click on the small blue triangle near the event on the calendar and get details about the event, directions, page links, etc.  Also a form to request a calendar entry.
  • Surfski Reviews – Wesley’s surfski reviews.  Now with commenting capabilty,  allowing readers to comment on their experience with a particular ski.
  • Classifieds – Similar format as before, with an updated request form with capability to upload up to 3 pictures.  This will help get classified listed quicker.
  • Paddler Profiles – Soliciting feedback from our readers via a contact form.   Definitley willing to convert the previous profiles, and grow this section, just not sure the best way to promote interaction and updates.  Please let us know your thoughts if this is a good use of our efforts, and any suggestions to enhance the previous layout!  Thanks

  • Upcoming NE Open Water Races –  The next 5 upcoming NE open water races, automatically generated by the “NE Calendar” categories “SSR Series Open Water Race” and “NE Open Water Race”
  • All NE Upcoming Races, Events and Paddles: See Northeast Calendar for Full Details – The next 5 upcoming events from the calendar, including all categories.
  • Recent Comments –  The last 5 comments to any posts on the site, chronologically
  • Topics –  Categories used for just about all the post in the site.  Basically a “table of contents” for quickly looking for a certain type of post.  This will evolve over time as the site grows.
  • Surfski DVD –  Link to the Surfski Basics DVD that Welsey and Mark created that pretty much started the site.
  • Contributors –  Another great feature of the WordPress technology we are using.  Whenever a contributor adds an article, we “tag” their name and links to them in this section.  The font size correlates to the number of posts, click and see the actual posts.   During the conversion, it was fun to see the many contributions we have, and looking forward to more in the future.

  • 2010 NE Race Gallery –  Click on an image and see 12 of 42 photos from our 2010 race season.  Each time the page refreshes, you’ll see a different 12 of the 42 photos  Tried to capture a picture of anyone who paddled a ski in the races we were at, sure I missed someone so please email me a photo and I’ll add to the gallery.
