Post from Kayaking Journal Blog, October 15, 2015. It is applicable to surfski paddling as well. The pictures are from a clinic I did in October to a group of triathletes who are excellent runners and bikers but wanted more information on paddling more efficiently and faster for their races. It was hosted by Kim and Hansel Lucas of Performance Kayaking.  This article I saw on Facebook as it relates to white water training but the theme is the same.  I have been coaching for years as a kayak instructor and surfski instructor. Everyone should take a few lessons either private or in a group setting from a qualified instructor.

Self Teaching vs Coaching

Recently I had a brief discussion with someone about the merits or otherwise of being coached in kayaking. This person was keen to get himself onto much harder white water in an effort to improve. He is a very solid grade 3 kayaker, but he wants to be equally solid at grade 4.

We both had polar opposite views of the best way to progress. He was of the opinion that he didn’t need any technique coaching and that it was simply a case of getting onto the water and naturally becoming better through trial and error.
