Custom Kayak Erg
Joe White of Ohio, surfski and K1 paddler, builds kayak paddling ergs by using used Nordic Track ski machine parts for the drive/resistance system and then installs them on a custom wood frame that he has refined over the years. The frame is made of poplar wood with a nice maple strip running down the middle. The Kayak Erg comes with an adjustable footrest and adjustable tension to modify your workout. The Kayak Erg is extremely smooth like the more expensive ergs on the market. Simply adjust the footplate that moves along the center track, then take a few strokes to see if the adjustable tension is appropriate for your workout. Use your personal heart rate device to monitor your time and heart rate. The Erg is an excellent way to keep to:
- Simulate your paddling stroke when you can’t be on the water.
- Warm up before a race or on water training session.
- Improve your stroke by setting up the JoeGoErg in front of a mirror to ensure you have an efficient stroke.
- Use as part of your offseason training routine.
Joe builds these at the custom cabinet shop where he works. The cost is $800 for the non-hinged version you see in the pics below. If you can’t pick them up locally then a hinged model is available for $200 more to cover the extra cost and shipping. You can E-mail Joe at dirt22222@hotmail.com with orders or questions.
